Perception
24in x 36in Photopea,Images October-November 2021 Exhibition Text:
The original intention of the piece was to portray how I felt when I first started to wear the hijab. I was inspired by Andy Warhol's Campbell Soup Cans, this can be seen from the posters with my face on them.By choosing a picture that would be similar to a commercial good so that it would be the focus of attention. I was also inspired by Street Advertising, the overall idea of the piece was similar to those of seeing posters on a brick wall in public. The piece was made using images retrieved from the internet and pictures of myself using Photopea.

Essay
Before entering freshman year, I planned on wearing a hijab fully. In the past, in middle school and elementary I would occasionally wear a hijab just to wear it. I had a mindset that I'm not wearing it everyday, this is just an ¨experiment¨ to see how I feel about it. However the summer before 9th grade I had started wearing it more often and decided that I was going to wear it officially. The thought of going in public did not scare me for some reason, however the thought of going to school with a hijab did. I might not have felt so anxious or nervous if it had been a situation where many kids from my middle school weren't also attending the same high school I was because I would have an opportunity to ¨have a fresh start¨ with new people who wouldn't know that I am just starting my journey. But since there were a lot of people from my middle school I was anxious and scared of what they might think. I was scared of being asked too many questions like ``why are you wearing that” or ¨ you didn't wear it before¨. The nerves are also from the fact that people may not know my religious beliefs and now because of my attire they will. Which causes the fear of being perceived from my religion without knowing my personality or character. It also adds to being able to identify my beliefs because I am publicly displaying. The thought of having people perceive me from just what i´m wearing makes me anxious and overwhelmed.
Inspiration
Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol was a magazine and ad illustrator but than became a leading artist for the 1960´s Pop Art movement. In the 1950 Warhol began to paint more and started making pieces that would be categorized as Pop Art where he painted commercial goods. In 1964 Andy Warhol opened his own studio called ¨The Factory¨, a place that was highly popular. Overall, Andy Warhol had an impact influence on the Pop Art movement.

I was inspired by Campbell¨s Soup Cans because that the idea I formulated would best represent the story I wanted to tell. I believe that this exact piece can help me because my idea is to have an image of my face replace the Campbell Soups and have it on a blank sheet of paper.

I was also inspired by street advertising. Posters you may see on a wall or brick wall, gave me the idea of my project. Where I would have my the Campbell Soup Idea, than put it all over a wall to make it look like advertising.

Planning
The first thing I did to begin my planning for this project was write the essay that corresponds with it. Writing the essay first really helped me start to formulate ideas on how I wanted to portray it. At first I came up with multiple different ones but none of them felt right until I started to do research. Once I completed research and found my inspiration; Andy Warhol and Street Advertising. I sketched how I wanted to make the piece to come out and started making it. I also plan to blur the picture so that you can only see the outline of me. This can tie into my essay because people would perceive me without knowing who I am just as how they see me.I looked for a picture that would imitate the Campbell Soup Cans in Andy Warhol's piece. I decided to go with my school photo because it is one that people see the most and that could tie into the meaning of my essay. Before I could start the process of making the project, I needed to get images that would help me complete it. I looked for a white background to imitate paper and another white blank paper except this with a tack in it. I also looked for a picture of a brick wall so that it would look like

Process
To begin the actual making of the project, I first went onto the Photopea program and set the project as 24in x 36in and 170 resolution. I named it Digital Collage and then opened all of the images I got during the planing process. I then copied and pasted the brick wall on to the blank template to have it as a background. After that I used the laso tool to outline the picture of my arm and hand and pasted that to the first template.
|
I had a hard time trying to paste my hand. you can see that in pictures. After I situated my arm and hand, I copied and pasted the white papers onto the brick wall. I then stretched and warped each of them to make it look like they were stuck onto the brick wall. I then took the picture of my face and reduced the sizes so that I could move them around and fit more then one on the papers.

Experimentation
As said in the Planning stage above, I had many different ideas before I produced the final piece. Although I could have said for any of these ideas that the person being highlighted represents how someone might feel when they are being perceived, I just did not overall like any of the ideas.
For my First idea I thought about making a piece that would have my body outline darkened in a crowd of people that where light. However, after some thought I decided that this idea would not best portray the essay. I came to this conclusion because if someone where to look at this piece, they may think its about someone who is overwhelmed, having an identity crisis, or social anxiety. While those examples are good, I didn't feel it represented my story the way I wanted it to be.
My second idea, I thought of doing something like the Shot Marilyns however, with one person centered and four different facial expressions.

Another idea I had was doing and mimic of Andy Warhol´s piece. However I felt that It was too simple and would not allow me to visually tell the story of my essay.

Critique
Similarities
- The overall idea of having posters on a brick wall is similar to the inspiration on the left.
- Another similarity would be having the same image repeated like in the inspiration on the right.
- A similarity between Andy Warhol's piece and mine are that both pieces give the ability for people to perceive them, with Warhol's you see a can of soup repeatedly over with different flavors giving the viewer the option to choose which one they would prefer even though they are the same thing. With my piece, its my face displayed on a brick wall, allowing someone to perceive me without actually knowing me.
- A difference between the inspiration and my piece is that the inspirations piece is individually separated and they are all the same sizes. Meanwhile my piece has the same concept however I have variations of the same image.
- Another difference would be the overall presentation of the pieces.
Reflection
Learning how to use Photopea has aloud me to understand how to make the piece I wanted. It has also given me a new skill set that I can use for future projects. The inspiration of my project was to find something that would allow the essay to be told visually. I believe that the inspiration has really helped me make the overall piece. The biggest challenge I faced while making the piece was figuring out how to warp pictures without messing it up completely. Another challenge I faced was figuring out how to copy and paste an image and not the background. My favorite part of this project was the final product, because after I struggled to complete some components. The finished product was satisfying to have. As people look at my piece, I hope they understand my intention of it. That it is meant to portray being judged without people knowing the real you.

Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause effect relationship between your inspiration and its effect on your artwork?
I am able to identify the cause and effect relationship between my artwork because when I look at my planning I wasn't able to come up with ideas prior to ginseng inspiration. Once I did I was able to come up with an idea that transformed into something else.
What is the overall approach of the author regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The overall approach the author took regarding the inspiration was putting the pieces into the perspective and having them in a spotlight.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, culture, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
When first researching for inspiration, a conclusion I made was that I had to be extremely specific when searching for something that would help me. I couldn't just search a movement and expected something to
What is the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The central idea of my inspirational research was to find something that would allow me to portray my story the way I think it would best be represented and perceived.
What kind of inference did you make while reading your research?
An inference I made while reading my research was that there are not many pieces that had the components I wanted, or what I was looking for. I had to be specific when conducting research on looking for inspiration.
